Lake facts & buying details

Lake size, shoreline & homes

We haven’t verified a current home count or a lake-wide shoreline survey for Big Rideau Lake. The measurements below describe sampled water, not the swimming area at an individual cottage.

What to check at the waterfront

Look at the bottom underfoot, water depth at the dock, the slope into deeper water and plant growth in late summer. Ask how spring and late-season water levels affect access. A sheltered bay can feel very different from an exposed point on the same lake.

Before buying a cottage here
Start with Portland Harbour

The Township of Rideau Lakes owns Portland Harbour on Big Rideau Lake. Its harbour page provides current contact and slip information. If your purchase depends on a marina or harbour berth, confirm availability and the terms directly; buying a nearby cottage does not reserve a berth.

Check access beyond a public launch

A launch helps you get onto the water for a visit. Seasonal parking, overnight mooring and storage are different questions. For a boat-access property, ask the seller for the actual agreements and determine whether they transfer to a buyer.

Price the whole season

Budget for the mortgage, property costs and the boating arrangements you need. Include insurance that matches occupancy and any rental plans. Compare that budget with keeping your current home before deciding how much equity or savings to use for the purchase.

Questions for the showing
  • Is a berth available, and does any existing agreement transfer?
  • What public and private access will you rely on?
  • Who handles the property when you are away?
Fish, depth maps and public access

Ontario’s Fish ON-Line brings together fish species, depth contours where available, access points and fishing rules.
