Swimming, weeds and the lake bottom

A clear lake can still have plenty of plants. Shelter from waves, the lake bottom, water depth and season all affect a particular shore. Check the swimming area during late summer, ask for seasonal photographs and look at the nearest monitoring sites.

For swimming advice, use current local public-health notices. These historical water records do not test for bacteria or guarantee safe water.

Plants at the waterfront
Use the lake bottom, slope and shelter from waves to assess a specific shoreline.

Algae & current advice
Check Ontario’s bloom guidance and the local public health unit before relying on the water.

Fish, depth maps and public access

Ontario’s Fish ON-Line includes species records, depth contours where available, access points and fishing rules. Match the lake and location before using a map.

How many homes are on a lake?

We show a count only when a source identifies what was counted and when. Homes, vacant lots, association members and surveyed shorelines are different things. Some lake plans contain useful historical inventories; a current count is often unavailable.

Look for dated counts on the Kennisis, Little Kennisis and Lake of Bays guides. Where source figures conflict, the lake guide says so.

Sources and how we use the data

Ontario Lake Partner exports through 2025, retrieved October 13, 2026. Coverage is monitored waterbodies, including some river sites, not every Ontario lake. Township labels come from the source and may reflect historic boundaries.

We join records by provincial lake and site identifiers. Each sampling location stays separate. We exclude invalid values, exact duplicate observations and phosphorus results marked as possible outliers. Tables show the mean, range and sample count for the latest five sampled years at each site. Sampling schedules vary, so these are not standardised annual averages or a water-quality ranking.
