Life on Buckhorn Lake
- Boating
Lock 31 sits between the lakes at Buckhorn. Longer trips through the waterway need to fit the lock’s operating hours.
Lock 31 visitor information- Village access
Buckhorn village is a short walk from the lockstation. It is a useful stop when exploring cottages by car or boat.
- Shoreline
In the Kawarthas, shallow, sheltered shores with soft bottoms can support more aquatic plants. This describes conditions that favour weeds, not a rating of every Buckhorn cottage.

Check the bay and the bottom
The Kawartha Lake Stewards Association identifies sheltered, gently sloping shores with soft sediment and nearby wetlands as places more likely to support abundant plants. This is a shoreline guide, not a survey of every property on this lake. Visit the actual swimming area in late summer.
KLSA Aquatic Plants Guide, page 11What to check at the waterfront
Look at the bottom underfoot, water depth at the dock, the slope into deeper water and plant growth in late summer. Ask how spring and late-season water levels affect access. A sheltered bay can feel very different from an exposed point on the same lake.

Before buying a cottage here
Start at Lock 31
Parks Canada identifies Buckhorn’s Lock 31 at 1961 Lakehurst Road, a short walk from the hamlet, with lake cruising above and below the lock. Its visitor page links to operating hours and navigation information. Check those current details for your planned travel dates instead of assuming unrestricted passage.
Confirm which Buckhorn lake
Listings may refer to Buckhorn Lake or Lower Buckhorn Lake. Match the legal address and the waterfront to a map before comparing properties. For your own boat, check the route from the dock, seasonal water levels, navigation hazards and any lock passage you would use.
Ask before changing the shoreline
On the Trent-Severn Waterway, shoreline work may involve Parks Canada as well as municipal approvals. Show the proposed work to the appropriate authorities before ordering a dock or treating an existing boathouse as a model. Permit history and waterfront title belong in the purchase review.
Questions for the showing
- Is this Buckhorn Lake or Lower Buckhorn Lake?
- Does your normal boat trip depend on the lock being open?
- Which approvals cover the existing dock and proposed work?
Fish, depth maps and public access
